Alumni Focus - Kirsten George (Kowitz '11)

Kirsten George (Kowitz '11) and family
Kirsten George (Kowitz ‘11)

Kirsten (Kowitz) George (‘11) completed her teaching degree and soon after moved to St. Lucia to teach at an international school. During her time there, she met her husband Casey. They have since moved back to the states, and she now serves as the Children’s Ministry Director at NorthCross Church in Lakeville. Kirsten shares her journey from SCLA to today.

What does St. Croix mean to you?
St. Croix is a place where I was able to grow in my faith daily through chapel services. I had teachers who truly cared about me as a person. Through the encouragement of multiple teachers, I decided to go to Martin Luther College to pursue a degree in education so that I could teach the next generation that Jesus loves them.

Did any specific SCLA teachers make a positive impact on you?
Mr. Mielke taught me that not everything has to be black and white. We did lots of projects in biology, and he left many of them open for creativity. Looking back, this was the start to me learning that not everything needs to be perfect, and sometimes you have to go with the flow. People can do things differently and still accomplish the same goal at the end.

How did you end up in St. Lucia?
I went to Martin Luther College and studied Early Childhood Education. After I had finished student teaching, I started to consider teaching internationally. I ended up moving to St. Lucia, an island in the Caribbean, and taught at an international school for three years. I was involved at the church there and ended up meeting my husband, Casey.

What does ministry and work look like lately with your job at NorthCross?
I recently started as the Children's Ministry Director at NorthCross in Lakeville and am in charge of their NorthCross Kids program. Every week the children in NorthCross Kids learn that Jesus loves them in fun and engaging ways. I love that I am able to help teach the next generation about Jesus.

Anything else you want to share?
Last February, we were blessed with a baby girl. Our life now revolves around Raelynn. We are looking forward to bringing her to St. Lucia soon to introduce her to the rest of our family and friends.
