Alumni Focus - Garett Maag ('18)

Garett-Maag-2018-UND-football
Garett Maag ('18)

We caught up with Garett Maag (‘18) who is a Division-I student athlete at University of North Dakota. He plays wide receiver for FCS (1-AA) North Dakota out of the Missouri Valley Football Conference. Read about his SCLA football story and what led him to continue playing in college.

What is your favorite St. Croix memory?

My favorite St Croix memory would be the extra curriculars/sports and the friendships that I made.

Did any specific SCLA teacher or staff make a positive impact on you?

There were a lot of teachers and staff that made a positive impact on me, but I would have to say Ryan Hulse made a lasting positive impact on me because he pushed me to play football my junior year. I’ll never forget when I was working out in the weight room, and he came in and talked me into playing football.

You were on St. Croix’s football team that was Class 3A State runners-up in both 2016 and 2017.  What made that team so good? How did that experience prepare you for college football and life away from home?

What made our team so good in 2016 and 2017 were the coaching staff and the players. The players loved football so much that we weren’t just out practicing to practice, but we loved the grind of practice and playing with each other. Another reason why we were so good was because the players had such strong relationships. I’ll never forget having pregame dinners at the Kletscher’s house with the guys.

This experience helped me for college and life by never taking something for granted. There aren’t that many guys who get to play college football, and I was very blessed to be one of them. Life as a D1-FCS player has a lot of positives, but with those positives comes a lot of responsibility. Lots of grinding for summer workouts, fall camp, and winter workouts, just to play up to 16 games. As a team captain, I try my best to lead the team by example. I really try to be a servant leader because I believe that is the best leadership someone can have: serving others before yourself.

What are you studying at University of North Dakota?

I am majoring in Business Marketing, and I plan on graduating this December.

Anything else you want to share? Fun hobbies?

My girlfriend is playing basketball at UND, and she is from Australia. My favorite hobbies are fishing and being at the cabin as much as I can with friends.

Catch Garett this Saturday, October 30 at 2:00 as the UND Fighting Hawks play at Missouri State, streamed live on ESPN+.
