Alumni Focus - Abbey Koenig ('20)

Abbey Koenig (‘20) may have graduated from high school at a challenging and uncertain time, but in the years since, it’s easy to see how she has adapted and chased the things that fueled her creativity. Abbey shares how SCLA taught her confidence, patience, kindness, and other values that have stuck with her as she now leads her own photography business.

What are some of your favorite memories from your time at SCLA?

One big standout memory was the Pep Band. During basketball season, a small group of us would go into the band room during the game and just hang out - playing music on the speakers, playing instruments, and just making up our own fun. I still have all the old videos saved somewhere from those days. 

Were there any teachers or staff who had a big impact on you?

There are so many! But to name a few: Mr. Fenske and Mr. Olson had so much patience when it came to teaching me music or Spanish and were always willing to help – they made me want to teach other people more. Mr. Burmeister (my track coach) pushed me in practices to try harder for the races – he motivated me to push others to do their best. Mrs. Kapanke taught me kindness. Mrs. Maki showed me it’s okay to show your goofy side. Pastor Enter taught me acceptance for everyone. I miss all of them very much and hope they’re doing well!

What lessons—academic or personal—did you carry with you after graduation?

Like I mentioned previously, my teachers taught me so many things. I took those lessons and applied them to my years at college. 

How did your experience at SCLA shape who you are today?

Going into high school I was very shy and did a lot of extracurriculars where I could hide amongst my peers. I definitely opened up and became more confident in myself as a person while at St. Croix. 

What path did you take after graduating?

After graduating I went to community college during the COVID years. I transferred to Minnesota State Moorhead and pursued a major in Film Production with 3 minors in Advertising & PR, Entrepreneurship with a Marketing emphasis, and Vocal Performance. I was the Social Media manager for 4 different clubs, became the photographer for the college’s marketing team, and enjoyed being in the choirs. 

I started my photography business while in school, and ultimately decided to leave college to focus more on my business and run it full time. Leaving college isn’t always traditional but I’m very happy with the opportunities I’ve been able to take on because of that. I’ve been the proud owner of Moments Made Photography LLC for over 4 years now. This year I’ve been crazy busy with photoshoots for graduates, families, couples, concerts, and many weddings along with some other miscellaneous projects. Most recently I took on a brand deal with a camera gear company (Brevitē) and am working with them to promote their products and my work.
