Volunteer Makes Big Impact on St. Croix Lutheran’s New Dorm
West St. Paul, MN
March 23, 2015 - Merlin Stuebs (76), Appleton, Wisconsin, is volunteering his time through Kingdom Workers (kingdomworkers.com) to install cabinetry, fire extinguisher boxes, and window sills in St. Croix Lutheran Grades 6-12 new 3-story, 152-bed dormitory, and he’s doing it single-handedly.
Stuebs, who has no connection to SCL beyond Kingdom Workers, began in carpentry in 1957 at the age of 18. He was a carpenter and contractor for many years and now retired, uses his skills to serve others for Christ, traveling around the United States and staying on site until his work is done. He has volunteered countless hours on projects all around the United States. “I really dedicated myself to service with the Kingdom Workers in the 1980s when there were many projects,” he states. Since then, he has lost count of how many projects he has worked on. “It’s such a great opportunity to use my gifts for something so worthwhile,” said Stuebs who clearly loves what he does.
St. Croix Lutheran Grades 6-12 is building a new 3-story, 152-bed dormitory to replace two smaller on-campus dormitories that are at capacity and in need of updates. Since 1995, SCL has boarded students from around the United States and from 15 countries on six continents. The 120-student international population at SCL accounts for 25% of the student body, making it the largest middle school and high school international boarding program in the Twin Cities. SCL expects the new dormitory to be at capacity within a few years and may reopen one of the existing dormitories at that time. The new dormitory is on target to open this spring.
St. Croix Lutheran Grades 6-12 was established in 1958 and serves the local community and the world with an excellent college-preparatory curriculum including 15 AP and college-credit courses, championship co-curriculars (Football Section Champions – 2006, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014; State Class AAA Champions – 2011, 2013; Boys & Girls Track Section Champions – 2012; Boys Track State AA Champions – 2009; Volleyball Section Champs & State Participants – 2012; Boys Basketball Section Champions – 2012, 2015 & Class AA Third Place, 2015; Boys & Girls Golf Section Champions & State Participants – 2012), and a global perspective in a caring, Christian family community.
