St. Croix Lutheran President Accepts Call to Bethany Lutheran College

West St. Paul, MN

Thursday, February 26, 2015: Dr. Gene Pfeifer (56), Inver Grove Heights, Minnesota, third president of St. Croix Lutheran Grades 6-12 in West St. Paul, Minnesota has announced his resignation effective June 30, 2015 after being elected the tenth president of Bethany Lutheran College, Mankato, Minnesota. Pfeifer will assume his duties at Bethany on July 1, 2015.

Pfeifer has served as President of St. Croix Lutheran (SCL) in West St. Paul, Minnesota, since 2007. Prior to his tenure at SCL, Pfeifer was Professor of Education and Director of Clinical Experiences at Martin Luther College (MLC) from 1993 until 2007. Under Pfeifer’s leadership, SCL has seen significant growth in both traditional and international enrollment numbers, and has expanded the campus of the private, Christian, college preparatory school.

Pfeifer earned a bachelor’s degree from MLC, a master of science in education from The University of Wisconsin - Whitewater, and a doctor of philosophy in education, curriculum and instruction from the University of Minnesota.

Pfeifer is married to Dr. Carrie Pfeifer who will resign her positions at St. Croix Lutheran as instructor, Learning Resource Center Director, and Dormitory Director. She holds a doctor of education with special education focus from Nova Southeastern University and will be joining the faculty at Bethany as a full-time associate professor in the Education Department. She will also serve as Learning Disabilities Coordinator.

“This decision has not been easy. We both are thankful for the grace and numerous blessings God has showered upon SCL over the past eight years, so saying good-bye to a ministry for which we’ve grown to become extremely passionate is and will be difficult over the next several months, ” said Pfeifer.

“Carrie and I are excited about the future opportunities the Lord has put before us, we are equally confident that the Board of Regents and administration at SCL has developed a plan for transition that will serve God and his people here. You’ll be learning details about that plan in the upcoming weeks.”

St. Croix Lutheran Grades 6-12 is a private Christian middle school and high school located in West St. Paul, MN. Established in 1958, the school offers a full rang e of academic courses in English, mathematics, the sciences, business life skills, religion, the fine arts, world languages, social studies, and physical education. Accelerated and advanced placement courses are offered to ensure that students are well prepared for post-secondary education. 95% of SCL graduates pursue additional education at the university or college level after graduation. The school offers 23 interscholastic sports as a member of the Tri Metro Conference. In addition to athletics, students have opportunities to participate in drama, music, and leadership programs. Under the leadership of the Pfeifers, SCL’s new on-site 152-bed dormitory was planned and is scheduled to open in May 2015.

“While they will be greatly missed at St. Croix Lutheran, it will be exciting to see how our Lord will use their talents to further and strengthen His ministry and programs at Bethany. It is largely due to Gene’s leadership and abilities as President of St. Croix Lutheran that our school is in a strong position for enduring success, and with God’s grace St. Croix will continue down that path,” said Karl Hochmuth, Chairman of the SCL Board of Regents.
