Great Northern Union Male Chorus at St. Croix Lutheran Grades 6-12
Listening to world-class barbershop music and supporting a local music department; what a great way to spend an evening!
The award-winning Great Northern Union Male Chorus is set to spotlight at a fundraising concert at St. Croix Lutheran Grades 6-12 of West St. Paul, MN.
WEST ST PAUL, MN. – Benefit Concert March 31, 2016, at 7 PM (doors open at 6 PM) – Minnesotans know excellent music, and The Great Northern Union (GNU), based out of Hilltop, MN, is one of the best male chorus groups in the world. GNU, under the direction of Doug Carnes, and the folks in the music department at St. Croix Lutheran Grades 6-12 are teaming up to create a unique concert opportunity. “The concert on March 31, at 7 PM, will give the community, our school association and student body and music lovers, the opportunity to hear GNU and raise money to fund projects my department needs to complete,” said Music Department Chairman Casey Pufahl. The projects include three key items, which will enhance the music department’s performance area. “Our community has been very generous in the past, and we are asking for help to complete funding for new staging, a new sound shell, and a pipe and drape system,” Pufahl stated.
Most of St. Croix Lutheran’s concerts take place in the school’s gymnasium. Staging helps the students be more visible to the audience and allows the sound to blend better. The pipe and drape system will give the gym a more “concert feel,” which spurs students to perform their best.
“GNU performs all over the world, so I am very humbled and grateful the group selected St. Croix Lutheran to be the third stop on their Urban Tour Concert Series,” said Pufahl.
The Urban Tour Concert Series is designed to benefit local school music education programs. Joe Cossette, GNU’s Educational Coordinator, speaks of the goals of this program. “Youth outreach has always been a core part of our mission,” said Cossette. The concert series looks to generate funds for the schools in order to provide equipment, materials or additional experiences that would otherwise not be funded by the school budget.“We can’t think of a better way to promote the message of life-long choral singing than to come together for an event like the concert with St. Croix Lutheran that truly spans all ages. We hope that the Urban Tour Concert can continue to impact the lives of students throughout the Twin Cities metro area,” report Cossette.
Pufahl and the Music Parents Organization have been working on music department projects for several years. “The overall cost of this project is around $30,000, and we, with the community’s and GNU’s help, can achieve that goal.”
GNU tickets normally cost between $15 and $45 per concert. A general admission ticket at the March 31 concert is $10 for adults, $5 for students (ages 6-18), and kids (ages 0-5) are free. In addition to the ticket price, the school is asking patrons to consider contributing additional funds to the project.
